Today’s Expert Session on Dairy Products
We students of grades 7 and 8 had an Expert Session on how the dairy industry functions by Mr. Satyander Sharma, General Manager Tirumala Milk Products Ltd – A Wholly owned subsidiary of World’s Largest Dairy Company ” Groupe Lactalis”.
Mr. Satyander Sharma has 15 years of experience in Dairy and he has worked across the country with organizations like Amul and Reliance. He spoke about the various uses of milk, it’s production, packaging, and distribution. He is an alumnus of Sainik School Kunjpura Karnal and has represented his school in Trampoline at the Republic Day Parade in Delhi in 1994.
He holds an MBA from IRMA, Gujarat (A Premier Rural and Agri-Business School in India) and was the Sports Secretary for 2 years in IRMA. He is truly a great inspiration to many of us.
The first topic discussed was, ‘Total animal’s milk consumption’ Mr. Satyander Sharma displayed a graph and explained. And then we saw a graph on the percentage of dairy products we consume and we saw a video on how milk is processed from farms, transported to the factories using large trucks, and how it’s packaged and sent to our homes. Mr. Satyandar Sharma also told about how quality checking of milk for bacteria and other contaminants is done. He told us that they first check the raw milk before transporting it to the factory and then in the factory they recheck the raw milk to make sure it is not spoiled. The second step is, the milk once packed is stored in an airtight trailer and transported. He told us how the heating and the cooling process removes certain bacteria from the milk, the process is called Pasteurization. This Process was invented over 150 years ago by French scientist Louis Pasteur. He said that thermal processing (in basic terms, heating) could destroy, deactivate, or eliminate unwanted bacteria and pathogens. Because of Pasteurization and packing milk in Tetra packs under sterile conditions, it does not expire for up to 180 days.
Subsequently, Mr. Satyandar showed us how ice cream is made. He told us first the ice cream bars are made without the flavors. Then it is dipped into the flavor, followingly the ice cream is packaged into small plastic covers. After the production is done it is heated, melted, and again frozen so the ice cream is softer than before. We also saw a video on the following process. At last, we had a quick Question and Answer round to clarify all the doubts. Many of the students had doubts and Mr. Satyandar Sharma clarified all of our doubts one by one. All the students had to fill a feedback form before leaving the session.
It was an honor having Mr. Satyandar Sharma with us to share a whole lot of information based on his good 15 years of experience. We would like Mr. Satyandar back for another expert session as his experience of 15 years can not be told or expressed in 1 and a ½ hours. We enjoyed the session and learned a lot from it!
